KVPL Share its Environment Best Practices at Sustainable Biodiversity and Economic Development Conference in Colombo
“Our desire is to make Halgolle the best privately owned Local Nature Reserve within the plantation sector of Sri Lanka. In order that we could handover to the future generations of this country what we have inherited from our ancestors” this was said by Mr. Kavi Seneviratne, Managing Director, Kelani Valley Plantations PLC, said last week at a conference titled “Sustainable Biodiversity and Economic Development”
The two day conference was organized jointly by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, IUCN and John Keells Foundation to expand awareness and understanding on the importance of biodiversity and its preservation, which we believe would be an important tool in achieving development and alleviating poverty in Sri Lanka. T op corporate, academics, government officials and NGO’s participated and shared their experiences in biodiversity conservation initiatives. Kelani Valley Plantations PLC (KVPL) was invited to share its best practices on environment and biodiversity conservations.
Biodiversity conservation is a special initiative under the environment which is a main pillar of KVPL sustainable business strategy. KVPL is probably one of the plantations that operate within the region of sensitive eco-systems. KVPL environment best practices integrate energy conservation, water conservation/water quality improvement, solid waste management and Biodiversity conservation & enrichment. He further explained KVPL’s vision is to create a place where people and biodiversity co-exist to each other’s mutual benefit by managing natural and semi natural ecosystems and their bio diversity in a sustainable manner while promoting research education and responsible visitor services.
