Purity & Food Safety
“ Strategies driven by Social Consciousness and Ethicality… as we strive for excellence in process and purity of product, reflected by the HACCP, ISO 22000:2005, TASL-SGS accreditation of all our black tea manufacturing facilities” This tea is produced in our estates adopts strict agricultural practices and guidelines as stipulated by the Sri Lanka Tea Research Institute. The Tea is produced on ISO 22000:2005 and HACCP certified factories to fall well within the international food safety regulations. These certifications encompass all consumer and market needs. In addition, the tea plantations are have secured GLOBAL G.A.P certification to guarantee standards in quality. The adoption of acceptable agricultural practices coupled with aforementioned will ensure that the cleanest and the purest of KVPL Tea will reach the consumer. Ethical Business

Kelani Valley Plantations joined the United Nations Global Compact in March 2006 to embrace and espouse the ten principles of Global Compact under the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. UNGC Ten Principles
Human Rights Principle 1 Business should support and respect the protection of international human rights within their sphere of influence.
Principle 2 Make sure they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
Labour Principle 3 Business should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining
Principle 4 The elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour
Principle 5 The effective abolition of child labour
Principle 6 The elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation
Environment Principle 7 Business should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges

Environment

All tea estates have been accredited as GLOBAL G.A.P compliant by SGS – New Zealand & all rubber plantations have obtained the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifications from SGS- South Africa. The above standard reassure the consumer that the production systems on the plantations are designed to minimizes detrimental impacts on the environment, including minimal use of chemicals in agricultural practices, a responsible approaches to worker health and safety and the preservation of biodiversity within the plantations. KVPL is also maintain 1,109.98 ha of natural forest as buffer zones & manage 442.14ha as commercial timber plantations. Kvpl also signatory to the UNGC CEO water mandate & Caring for Climate.
Biodiversity Survey & Conservation
In 2008 the Company commissioned a team of environmental scientists, led by a specialist in the field, permanently attached to the UN, to carry out a fauna, flora and bio-diversity assessment of all its plantations, identifying fresh water reserves, resident species and , particularly, endangered species.
Society - ‘A Home for Every Plantation Worker’
“Quality of life for all our people, a concept driven by our ‘Home for Every Plantation Worker’ initiative, encompassing Health and Nutrition, Family Care, Shelter, Empowerment and Community Development”
A Home for Every Plantation Worker, a CSR initiative was internally launched in January 2007. This programme is a commitment made by Kelani Valley Plantations to embark on a journey to improve the lives of our plantation communities of nearly 54,000 people. This covers:
1. Living Environment The programme helps build homes for the workers. • Assist in building new houses for the worker family • Improvement to existing houses • Infrastructure support related projects
2. Health & Nutrition Each family is assisted through continued pre-school, child support and medical facilities to enhance their quality of life. • Preventive and curative health care for workers/families • Maternal care – pre-natal & post-natal • Expanded program on immunization • Child development centers for child growth & development.
3. Community Capacity Building The programme empowers each employee through Estate Worker Co-operatives and enhances the individual’s value to the community. • Nursery and Pre school facilities for workers’ children • Recreation facilities • Empowerment of workers through Estate Worker Housing Cooperatives • Skill & social development programmes
4. Empowerment of Youth The programme also places special emphasis on training and guidance of youth, empowering them with better life skills. • Monitoring of child development according to ILO standards • Guidance provided in assistance to continue education • Vocational training & awareness programs
